As the former Governor of Rivers state, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, marks his 60th birthday Golf Classic on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, friends, associstes and aides have concluded plans for a special commemorative Golf tournament in his honour.
Speaking in an interview at the weekend at Portharcourt Golf Club in Rivers state capital, his special side and the competition’s secretary Portharcourt Golf Club, Comrade Ordinance Emeji, said the tournament became necessary as a mark of honour for their principal in view of his track – record of achievements in public service to Rivers state and Nigeria.
He disclosed that the event billed for the Golf section of the Port Harcourt Club would attract prominent golfers within the state and the international community.
Ten years after leaving office as the sports-loving governor of Rivers State, friends and political associates of Chibuike Amaechi, the Transportation Minister in the Buhari administration, are bracing to celebrate him at 60 with a commemorative Golf Tournament.
Amaechi, who was born at Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers to the family of the late Elder Fidelis Amaechi and Mary Amaechi, made history as a sports-loving governor (2007-2015).
As the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Amaechi in May 2013 acknowledged that his administration’s investment in sports was yielding dividends. He said so after receiving the second-place trophy for the 18th National Sports Festival, ‘Eko 2012’, from his deputy and Chairman of the Team Rivers Participation Committee, Tele Ikuru, at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
In the sports festival hosted by Lagos State in 2012, Delta State emerged as overall winner followed by Rivers. Earlier in 2011, Rivers, which hosted the sports festival – Garden City Games 2011 – also became the overall winner.
Earlier in February of the same year, he disclosed that the new Port Harcourt Sports City with 38,000 capacity Olympic stadium was to be ready for use by August. That was when he was conveying the National Good Governance Tour, (NGGT) team round major projects of his administration in the state.
He said the Olympic stadium that cost about N34 billion was capable of holding any international sports events of Olympic magnitude and that the city tagged The Greater Port Harcourt City will stretch to the new sea port that was also under construction to actualise his administration’s dream of a new Port Harcourt city.
The whole idea of developing the area, according to him, was not only geared towards transforming the state but to explore the raw talents in the youth to enable them channel their energy and skills into sports in a manner that they can compete with their peers anywhere in the world.
Amaechi also said that the world class sport city covering over 2,500 hectares of land will have 5,000 public toilets, four swimming pools, javelin court, high jump court, volleyball and lawn tennis courts. Other components included long jump court, boxing ring, wrestling court, football pitches among others.
However, as Amaechi gets set to mark his 60th birthday on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, his friends, associates and aides are concluding plans for a special commemorative Golf tournament in his honour.
