Otunba Segun Showunmi, a renowned political figure, has called on Nigerians to join the movement in the search for good leaders to lead Nigeria.
This he said at the Port Harcourt Townhall Meeting of the National Opposition Movement (The Alternative), a platform aims to restore the integrity and vibrancy of Nigeria’s democracy, which has suffered setbacks since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
Speaking to Dez Mayorz News and other newsmen in Port Harcourt, Showunmi frowned at the decline in citizens’ enthusiasm for elections, citing increasing voter apathy, the loss of party ideologies, and the dominance of financial inducements in electoral processes.
The convener highlighted the critical role of opposition in a thriving democracy but noted the near-absence of a viable opposition to hold the government accountable. He criticized elected opposition members for their lack of courage in addressing pressing national issues, adding that the judiciary and electoral umpire, INEC, have also faced integrity challenges.
Showunmi called for a reorientation of citizens, emphasizing the dangers of vote trading and the consequences of electing individuals with questionable wealth. According to him, The Alternative is committed to advocacy, education, and the eradication of electoral malpractices that undermine democracy.
Showunmi extended an invitation to Port Harcourt and the South South region to join the movement, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect and sustain the nation’s democracy.
Stakeholders from different political parties and youth groups attended the program.
