The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has tentatively announced Saturday, 9 August 2025, as the Election date for the Local Govt. Council.

And politicking is at the top gear with political players showing their interest in contesting.

The recently resolved Rivers State political crisis between Gov. Fubara and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike will play a vital role in who emerges; begging the question of loyalty, governance and youth impact.

Constituency 1:

The elites and some political leaders in the Port Harcourt Local Government Area are drumming their support for Sir Allwell Ihunda DSSRS’s continuity, having performed tremendously during his 1st tenure in office with his visible people-oriented projects and youth impact, having empowered over 1,300 youth on various sustainable skills acquisition, and also shown total loyalty to Nyesom Wike’s Wikematic family’ during the Rivers State political crisis.
The elites are saying he should be returned to finish the good work he was doing.

More so during the Rivers State gubernatorial election, Nyesom Wike promised to return any LGA chairman who delivers his LGA, and they eventually did and you know Wike is ‘Ekwu eme’.

It is gathered that they are suggesting and teasing Barr. Chima Aguma as the sure game to beat the Labour Party lawmaker to win the Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 1 comes 2027 general election.

Also, the Sole Administrator of the Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Dr.(Barr.) Sam B. Kalagbor is also on the game, though has not made his intention known.

Constituency 2:
The Port Harcourt Federal constituency 2 people prefer the constituency 1 to finish their 6 years so that when it is their turn, they will do 6 years as well; but are still watching to seize opportunity if constituency 1 political leaders get divided.

Chief (Sir) Sam Soni Ejekwu is at forefront of determining the next Mayor of Port Harcourt from constituency 2. Many are clamouring for him to go for the position but he has not said, reacted nor made any statement in that regard.

Other likely potential candidates are Hon. Victor Ihunwo (Vokor) and Hon. Chimeka Nmerukini.

The leaders will sit and make the final decision but the most important thing is that peace has returned to Rivers State following Wike and Fubara political reconciliation.
