Following reported cases of cholera outbreak in some parts of the country, the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has renewed its call for stringent personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness among residents and businesses alike.
Acting Sole Administrator of RIWAMA, Hon Prince Obi Ohia who made the call during this year’s National Environmental Sanitation Day in Port Harcourt, Friday, emphasized the importance of preventive measures such as proper waste disposal, hand hygiene, and access to safe drinking water.
Speaking to journalists in his office, Hon Ohia urged vigilance against pollution, warning that recent cholera outbreaks in several states underscore the critical need for robust hygiene practices.
He said the agency will continue its educational efforts through public health marshals, urging residents to refrain from irresponsible refuse dumping and instead use government approved waste receptacles.
Established by the federal government in 2005, June 28th marks National Environmental Sanitation Day, a day set aside to create awareness on the essence of proper hygiene practices and prevention of communicable diseases.
This year’s theme is “Promoting Sustainable Waste Management for a Healthy Environment: Stop Open Dumping.”
